Campaign Against Puppy Farming & Unethical Breeding In Ireland

Introduction

Ireland has of late been establishing itself as the puppy farm capital of Europe . The ISPCA have discovered an unprecedented number of breeding establishments that are overcrowded, in which no healthcare is provided for the dogs and where the dogs are kept locked up with the remains of other dogs and in their own faeces.

Experiments with the breeding of the dogs is also taking place with horrific health problems and abnormalities afflicting these puppies.

The reason for this is the fact that there has been no regulations or laws here governing the breeding of dogs.

After a working group was established and recommendations made to the Government, John Gormley, Minister for the environment has promised to implement at least of the recommendations but to date it has still not happened.

When it finally gets through the process even if there are no loopholes it must then be policed very thoroughly which will be very difficult. Educating of the general public about puppy farming and the dangers of buying from one will definitely make a difference to the profit of these unscrupulous breeders. Without customers they cannot continue. This part of what our campaign is trying to do.

Of course puppy farming is only part of the problem, the amount of unwanted puppies in Ireland is phenomenal and is totally avoidable if people would just get their dogs male and female NEUTERED. It costs as little as 20 Euro and is so much better for the dog in every way.

Thousands of healthy dogs and puppies are destroyed needlessly in the countries pounds each year.

A dog surrendered can be put to sleep immediately with no chance of being rehomed while a stray has 5 days before being sent prematurely to “ Rainbow Bridge ” with a lethal injection.

The oneness is entirely on the owner to search for the dog, it is not the responsibility of the pound to search for owners. Of course if the dog had been microchipped it’s owners can be swiftly and efficiently located.

Microchipping gives every dog an origin and every owner a responsibility.

Of course standardising of breeding establishments is welcome but we believe that the only way to truly make a change is to follow the example of other countries and make neutering and microchipping compulsory in Ireland (with exemptions from neutering only being allowed after a limited number of licences to breed has been issued following extensive checks and guidelines adhered to).

Protection not profit is calling for everyone to pull together for the sake of our animals.

Please sign the petition, it only takes a minute and every signature counts!

It has also been suggested that if the Government were to introduce a once off reduced licence fee for all neutered dogs as opposed to a hefty yearly fee for those that are not neutered that this will make a huge difference.
